Overview

The initial mandate focused on the human rights situation in the conflict-affected areas of Northern and North-Eastern Uganda. In 2009, the mandate of the OHCHR presence in Uganda was extended to cover the entire country and all human rights issues. OHCHR is currently in discussion with the Government of Uganda about the modalities of a continued presence in the country.

Uganda: action plan gives hope to people with albinism

The Ugandan Government’s recognition of albinism as a disability, has led to the development of a national action plan. The plan, developed with the assistance of UN Human Rights, provides better assistance in all sectors from health to education.

Uganda: Promoting peace and human rights through dialogue

An on-going disarmament campaign in North-Eastern Uganda has seen a clash between security forces and the local Karimojong community. But a quarterly Karamoja Regional Protection Meeting – KRPM, between all parties in the conflict, is ensuring a refocus on respect for human rights.

Universal Periodic Review

Core documents for the current and previous cycles

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. The UPR is a State-driven process, under the auspices of the Human Rights Council, which provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations.
