Background
On the occasion of its 30th public session focused on Children of African Descent (23-27 May 2022 at UN HQ, New York), the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD) invites all interested individuals, organizations, civil society, experts and academics to provide information on the human rights situation of Children of African descent globally.
They welcome information on all human rights violations faced by children of African descent, including in the following areas:
- Health; family, education, social services;
- Cultural identity, representation, visibility, participation;
- Citizenship and residence status;
- Administration of justice, interventions by law enforcement, and immigration authorities;
- Trafficking in children of African descent;
- The status of children of African descent;
- Children of African descent with special needs; including children with chronic illness;
- The well-being and experience of children of African descent.
The Working Group would also welcome information on any positive measures that have been undertaken by Member States, national human rights institutions and equality bodies, civil society, and UN agencies, funds and programmes to protect the human rights of Children of African descent.
Finally, the Working Group would welcome any specific recommendations you would like to make to further the protection of human rights of Children of African descent.
What is the WGEPAD?
The WGEPAD is a UN body of independent experts appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council and dedicated to improving the human rights situation of people of African descent. To fulfill its mandate, the WGEPAD undertakes country visits; holds two annual sessions; responds to information and allegations received concerning its mandate under the Communications procedure; and reports to United Nations Human Rights Council and the General Assembly on activities relating to the mandate.
