Country visit to Venezuela from 01 February until 14 February 2024

Purpose: To invite all interested individuals and organizations, including civil society organizations, activists, and academics, to provide inputs on the priority issues listed below to assist the Special Rapporteur in preparing for the visit to Venezuela.

Background

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, will conduct an official visit to Venezuela from 01 February to 14 February 2024, at the invitation of the Government of Venezuela. His visit aims at assessing the realisation of the right to food in Venezuela, as well as the Government’s efforts to guarantee the right of everyone to adequate food.

The Special Rapporteur’s visit will include meetings with government authorities and other stakeholders, and will conclude with an end of mission statement on 14 February 2024. The final report of the visit will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council, in March 2025.

Key questions for input

Key questions for input The Special Rapporteur welcomes all relevant submissions that food organisations and other stakeholders may wish to transmit for his consideration in preparation of this visit, such as:

  • Recent analytical reports or surveys relating to the mandate of the Special Rapporteur
  • Information on relevant policies, programmes and legal framework
  • Priority issues/concerns and situations that warrant the attention of the Special Rapporteur
  • Suggestions on issues to examine and related locations to visit
  • Contact information for organisations and representatives to meet in different locations

In particular, the Special Rapporteur invites submissions that address the following broad questions (in your reply, please be specific with the details of who, what, when, where and how):

  • What are the main challenges and concerns facing food security in Venezuela and the enjoyment of the right to food by everyone in the country?
  • What are good practices that have strengthened the realization of the right to food in Venezuela, or which would contribute to its advancement, if adopted and implemented?
  • Which groups and/or individuals may be vulnerable to discrimination or at risk of being denied access to adequate food?
Confidentiality of inputs

All submissions received will be treated as confidential and will inform the preparation of the country visit and the consequent report.
