Background information

Saint Lucian Creole (Kwéyòl) is a French-based, Antillean creole language that has existed in Saint Lucia since the 17th century and is currently spoken by 90 per cent of the country’s population. A Kwéyòl Dictionary was published by the Government of Saint Lucia in 2001. Kwéyòl has been integrated into State and private media content and is used in Parliament. The Folk Research Centre in Saint Lucia is leading efforts to declare Kwéyòl one of that country’s official languages. Alternate Names : Saint Lucian Creole
