Human Rights Chief visits Iraq

GENEVA/BAGHDAD (6 August 2023) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk today begins a four-day official mission to Iraq, at the invitation of the Government.

During his visit, Türk will hold meetings in Baghdad, Basra in the southwest of the country, as well as Erbil in the north.

The High Commissioner will meet senior Government, parliamentary and judicial officials at the national level, as well as high-level officials in the Kurdistan Regional Government, and officials in Basra. He will also engage with civil society representatives in Baghdad, Basra and Erbil on a range of issues, including the human rights impact of climate change.

At the end of his mission, on 9 August, the High Commissioner is scheduled to hold a news conference in Baghdad at approximately 17:00 local time. Access to the news conference will be strictly limited to accredited media.

More details about the news conference, including instructions on registration, will follow in a media invitation to be issued locally.
