The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination this afternoon adopted its recommendations concerning the situation of the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination in Gambia and Sierra Leone. The Committee reviewed the status of the Convention in both countries in the absence of Government reports which were seriously overdue.
The Committee, noting that Gambia had not submitted a report since 1980, regretted that the country had not responded to the invitation to participate in the meeting and to furnish relevant information. The Committee suggested that the Government of Gambia avail itself of the technical assistance offered under the advisory services of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, with the aim of drawing up and submitting as soon as possible a report drafted in accordance with the reporting guidelines.
Sierra Leone, which had not filed a report with the Committee since 1974, was also requested to ask for technical assistance in the drafting of its report.
The Committee also continued its discussions about the World Conference against Racism, which will be held from 31 August to 7 September in Durban, South Africa.
When the Committee reconvenes at 10 a.m. on Friday, 23 March, it will conclude its three-week session by discussing organizational matters.
