GENEVA (13 November 2017) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein will visit El Salvador at the invitation of the Government from 15 to 16 November to discuss progress and challenges concerning human rights in the country.
Zeid, who will be the first High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit El Salvador, will meet President Salvador Sánchez Cerén.
He will also meet senior officials, including the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, members of the Coordination Commission of Justice, the Human Rights Ombudsperson, the Attorney General, the President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Legislative Assembly and other legislators.
Zeid will also meet civil society representatives and human right defenders, visit a women’s detention centre, and attend a ceremony at the José Simeón Cañas Central American University to mark the 28th anniversary of the murders of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter by government soldiers.
