12 March 2024

The UN Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, Livingstone Sewanyana, will conduct an official visit to Maldives from 12 to 21 March 2024.

During his 10-day visit, Sewanyana will assess best practices and challenges faced in promoting an international order that fosters the full realisation of human rights for all.

The expert will meet with authorities, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to assess the country’s engagement in international cooperation on peace and security, development and human rights. He will review efforts to promote democracy and enable effective participation of civil society in public affairs at local, national, regional and international levels, including the participation of women, youth and other traditionally marginalised groups. He will also consider lessons learned from the country’s efforts to combat climate change and its effects, and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Sewanyana will hold a press conference on 21 March at 11:00 am (local time) at the MARUKAB PLAZA, Ameer Ahmed Magu, 20027, k. Malé. Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists.

A report on his findings and conclusions will be presented to the Human Rights Council in September 2024.
