Statement by the President of the Human Rights Council on the passing of Kofi Annan
19 August 2018
I was profoundly saddened to hear of the passing of Kofi Annan - a global champion of peace, justice and human rights.
Kofi Annan personified the notion of human rights. He was a unique visionary who brought fresh air into the United Nations helping it carry out its many noble tasks while overcoming numerous global challenges. It was this vision which led to the creation of the Human Rights Council just over twelve years ago.
When Kofi spoke, people listened. His elegance, grace and articulation on countless global issues continue to inspire and manifest in our work today. His passion and dedication to serve victims of abuse and neglect will no doubt continue to inspire us in our own work at the Council, as it has since our inception.
I express my most heartfelt condolences to his wife Nane, his children, family, the people of Ghana, and all those who knew him personally. He will be deeply missed.
