Committee on Enforced Disappearances
Members of the Committee must be " experts of high moral character and recognized competence in the field of human rights, who shall serve in their personal capacity and be independent and impartial”. They are elected by the States parties to the Convention "according to equitable geographical distribution" and taking into account "the usefulness of the participation in the work of the Committee of persons having relevant legal experience and of balanced gender representation." (art. 26, para. 1 of the Convention).
About the Committee's election process
Each State party may nominate one person from among its nationals to stand for election at biennial meetings of the States parties. Members are elected for four years and may be re-elected once.
States parties shall vote by secret ballot from a list of persons nominated, taking into account the geographical distribution, relevant legal experience and gender balance of the nominees.
