In 1992, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has adopted its first guidance on violence against women -- General Recommendation No. 19.

Twenty-five years later, despite of significant progress made, gender-based violence against women persists. The newly adopted General Recommendation No. 35 provides more comprehensive guidance to accelerate the elimination of gender-based violence against women and girls.
