GENEVA (18 January 2019) - Yemen's human rights record will be examined for the third time by the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Wednesday, 23 January 2019, at a meeting broadcast live on  the Internet .

Yemen is one of 14 States. The Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review will review its record at its next session, which takes place between 21 January and 1 February. The first universal periodic review and the second periodic review of Yemen were conducted in May 2009 and January 2014, respectively.

The UPR is based on the following documents: 1) National report containing information provided by the State under review 2) Information contained in reports of human rights experts and independent expert groups known as special procedures, human rights treaty bodies and other international bodies 3) Information provided by Other stakeholders, including national human rights institutions, regional organizations and civil society organizations.

The UPR is a unique process that includes a periodic review of the human rights records of all 193 Member States of the United Nations. Since its first meeting in April 2008, the files of all 193 Member States of the United Nations have been reviewed twice during the first and second sessions of the UPR. During the third session of the UPR, States are expected to talk again about the steps they have taken to implement the recommendations made in previous reviews they have undertaken to follow, as well as to highlight the latest human rights developments in the country concerned.

The delegation of Yemen will be headed by Mohammed Mohsen Mohammed Askar, Minister of Human Rights .

Representatives of the three countries acting as rapporteurs for the review of Yemen are: Burkina Faso, Fiji and Bulgaria.

It is expected that the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review will adopt the recommendations on Yemen on 25 January at 1730 hours. The State under review may wish to express its positions on the recommendations made to it during its review. The recommendations will be shared with the media in advance on the same day.
